The Soma

The soma is a living and breathing body that takes on a first-person viewpoint, whereas the body is generally seen from a third-person point of view. What the soma senses is immediately known and needs no external party or equipment to dissect what is sensed for meaning. When you feel something, it is an instant illumination of your perception. You do not need anyone to tell you what that feeling means because it is factual to you whether or not it can be articulated.

That feeling of the soma can be bigger than the sum of its parts because it consists of a known past and a creative future experienced in the now. This is possible through the proprioceptors in the body, which are what helped you perceive before and are helping you perceive now. Perception can be external or internal. The external proprioceptors (exteroceptors) are the skin, oral cavity, eyes, ears and nose. They are on the outside of the body. The internal proprioceptors (interoceptors) are the internal organs of the body. They exist inside of the body.

The soma senses and regulates itself through movement. As it moves, it experiences its contact. Through this interaction, soma goes through a process of regulation or adjustment. To be able to feel the flow, it is necessary to tune in to one’s soma. This lays the foundation by which the flow in the larger sense of life beyond us can be understood and intrinsically felt.
