Flow

“The movement of flow tells you what is happening and where it is going.” -Vincent Yong

Flow is the continuous, circulatory and ongoing movement that represents the living and breathing functions and expressions of anything tangible or intangible. Flow exists everywhere. Where there is movement, there is flow.

Although we cannot look at flow itself, we can see it through a physical body or perceive it through a non-physical one. In the examples of water and human bodies, we can see the flow when they move. From streams to rivers, water flows toward the open seas. In dance and daily activities, human bodies flow in joyful expressions. While we can touch and hold paper currency in our hands, we cannot actually see the flow of cash in the economy. We can, however, perceive it. This is true also for the stock market where prices of stocks fluctuate daily, as represented by graphs and statistics. What are the other physical bodies you see where flow is being embodied? Where else can you perceive flow?

Flow has power, and it expresses itself. There is meaning in the movement of flow. From the constant work you get at your office, school or even at home, you know that there is progress, income and growth. When there is cash flow in the company, it tells us that the company is doing well. When blood flows in the body, we know we are getting nutrients and nourishment, and if it does not, we see an impending stroke or even a heart attack. When we observe a murmuration, it might mean nothing to some but be a spectacle to others in this natural phenomenon. What a flock of birds flying in harmonious and ever-changing shapes of visual designs might mean is up to one’s interpretation.

When a natural disaster hits an area, wiping out life forms and creating destruction to buildings and people’s livelihoods, how do we perceive it? The movement of flow tells you what is happening and where it is going. The perpetuation of flow can lead to life and the thriving of something, and the cessation of it can lead to death or the stopping of it. Neither is good or bad. A context, however, can inform you of the actions you need to take. When you ingest unhealthy foods over a long period of time and that lands you in the hospital because of a blocked artery, you know you have to stop the flow of bad foods going into you so that you can allow the blood to flow smoothly in your body. If you are getting a constant flow of negative emotions due to your being stuck in a place you do not enjoy and it is making you sick, then it is time for you also to make a change. When you are getting positive responses for the work you do, you become even more inspired to improve and give more.

If doing something makes you happy and fulfilled, there is no reason to stop doing it either. Basically, you do not want to keep doing something that makes you sick, and you do not want to stop something that gives you positive energy. Therefore, paying attention to how things are flowing is beneficial to life. Because following the journey of flow is informative, we can know what is happening in every process. This allows us to make informed decisions when something is not going smoothly or if things get stuck. When things flow well, they will continue to prosper and grow. This is when you can experience the abundance of the Source.

To be able to harmonize the flow in our everyday lives is to acknowledge the miracle that is happening constantly through the way in which things are aligned. The awareness of flow can stimulate our acts of gratitude and empathy beyond just the practical benefits. Flow allows one to learn, grow and heal. In so doing, we learn to differentiate as well as integrate. We see the big picture besides scrutinizing the details or parts. We understand the relationship between the parts and the whole. To tap into these abilities to know flow, we have to first engage with our bodies, or more precisely, the soma.
